Improve your packing table and packing

Packing takes too much time and feels messy.

Keep everything within reach, set up all packing tables the same way and make sure packing doesn't depend on attention alone.

What helps

  • Keep boxes, tape, filling material and tools within reach and give everything a fixed place.
  • Set up all packing tables the same way as much as possible, so anyone can work at any table right away.
  • Choose a working height that's comfortable for the kind of products you pack.
  • Make a clean, tidy packing table a fixed part of your process, not a good intention.

A poor packing table costs small bits of time all day long. People walk away for material that isn't there. Packing tables work slightly differently from each other. Things sit in the wrong place. It doesn't feel like a big problem, but at 100 orders a day it adds up.

A cockpit, not a pile of stuff

Make sure everything you need is within reach: boxes, tape, filling material, label printer, barcode scanner and computer. If you have to walk for it, it's in the wrong place.

Remove anything you don't need regularly. Less stuff on the table means less searching and less distraction.

Don't make attention your only check

No matter how good your team is, during peaks everyone gets less sharp. Set up the process so the most important checks don't depend on attention alone.

If you have multiple shipping methods, let your software preselect the right one automatically. That saves thinking. Scan every product as you pack, so you have an extra check. Seal the box right after you've scanned. The more time between scanning and sealing, the bigger the chance of a slip-up.

Set up all packing tables the same way

If every packing table is different, you lose pace and increase the chance of errors the moment someone works at another table. Give all materials a fixed, visible place and make that layout the same for every table.

Outline the shape of materials on the packing table, or use packing table stickers to mark the right spot. That way everyone knows immediately where things belong and tools go missing less often.

Choose the right working height

Many packing tables stand a little above hip height. For larger or heavier products it's sometimes more practical to work a bit lower. Look at the work, not at a standard size. Put the computer at standing height too, so you can quickly look something up without having to sit down.

Don't skimp on tools

Don't save on the materials you use all day. A slow printer, a scanner that struggles in low light or blunt scissors create daily irritation. Those frustrations cost you more than what you save on the purchase.

The package is your only physical touchpoint

For your customer, the package is the only moment they physically experience your business. A clean, well-presented package starts with a tidy packing table and a calm process.
